Practice Area DescriptionMunicipal Law |
|
Municipal law is generally an area of law devoted to the operation of a local government entity or a unit of a local government, particularly cities. Many times, this includes the designation of “city attorney.” In practicing municipal law, the lawyer may encounter a wide variety of issues —
- practical administration of the local government entity (finances, employees, and operation of city departments and properties — such as city buildings, streets, utilities, parks, libraries, and relations with rural water districts and other similar entities)
- civil claims by or for the local government
- economic development matters
- franchising
- land development (including annexation, subdivision development, and zoning)
- public safety matters (including civil and criminal code enforcement, and nuisance abatement).
The municipal attorney is also frequently called upon to review or prepare proposed resolutions or ordinances to establish the local government policy.
